Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report 2018-19
Our total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2018/19 are estimated at 233,749 tC02e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent), an increase of 28% from the previous year.
Key changes to our GHG emissions are:
- SF6 gas emissions have reduced;
- Internal electricity use has reduced; and,
- Emissions from transmission line losses have increased.
Emissions from transmission losses are a function of the overall carbon intensity of New Zealand generation over the period.
Changes to our carbon accounting system this year are responsible for a significant increase in reported indirect carbon emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods and transport.

2017/2018
Carbon Footprint Report
Our total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2017/18 are estimated at 171,563tC02e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent).
Our total carbon footprint increased by 36% from the previous year. This is due to two reasons: firstly emissions from electricity generation were 23% higher than the previous year, and secondly, voluntary Scope 3 categories, purchased goods and services and capital goods were included for the first time.
Transpower’s total emissions are largely influenced by emissions from transmission losses. During 2017/8 transmission losses measured in GWh decreased by approximately 2% compared to the previous year, however, emissions from these transmission losses per GWh increased due to the increase in the electricity emission factor.

2016/2017
Carbon Footprint Report
Our total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2016/17 are estimated at 125,608 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) – a decrease of 10% from the previous year.
National grid emissions are estimated at a total of 123,761 tCO2e, and are responsible for 98.5% of the total GHG emissions for 2016/17. This is 10% lower than the previous year. Corporate emissions are responsible for 1.47% of the total GHG emissions for 2016/17 and are estimated at a total of 1,847 tCO2e, which is 28% lower than the previous year.
