The Transpower Alliance has won the Deloitte Energy Award for Environmental Excellence for its work on the North Island Grid Upgrade Project (NIGU).
The prestigious event recognises companies who achieve excellence within the energy sector across the electricity, gas and petroleum industries.
The categories include Environmental Excellence, Energy Project of the Year and Energy Executive of the Year.
Transpower Alliance Environmental Manager, Dougall Campbell says that winning the award and being acknowledged by the industry is an honour.
"The project has been a technical and environmental challenge - the size of this project has meant that we had to change the way we looked at our environmental systems to deliver the results," he said.
"The project has required involvement and liaison with nine councils, over 300 directly-affected landowners, and multiple government agencies and regulators.
"At times we had over 50 varying workstreams, over 300 kilometres of access tracks and roads on working farms being installed and moving 180,000m3 of earth in some of the North Island’s most challenging terrain. This provides some large environmental challenges to overcome and we are pleased that our commitment to minimising our environmental impact has been successful," Dougall said.
The award also recognised their efforts in working with the community throughout the project, and their approach to innovation including the use of helicopters to reduce the environmental footprint of heavy machinery on the ground.
The Transpower Alliance Health and Safety team were also finalists in their category of Excellence in Health and Safety on the NIGU Project.
