We have completed our reviews of the HVDC single pole risk classification and cable discharge modelling as signalled in the 2024 Credible Event Review Scope report and invite comments from the electricity industry on our recommendations.
The HVDC single pole risk is currently classified as a Contingent Event (CE), which is covered by procuring reserves in the receiving island. This review assesses the market impact of reclassifying the HVDC single pole trip as an Extended Contingent Event (ECE) which relies on a combination of reserves and Automatic Under Frequency Load Shedding (AUFLS).
The second review contains our assessment of modelling HVDC cable discharge periods. It compares the costs of the current modelling method in Scheduling, Pricing and Dispatch (SPD) with the costs of not modelling the instantaneous reserve sharing restrictions and includes a comparison with a potential improved modelling approach.
In both reviews our recommendations are to retain current arrangements.
