Katherine Moore, Operations Planning Manager
Why did you choose to join Transpower?
I've had the privilege of choosing Transpower not just once, but twice. The first time was during the earlier stages of my career when I wanted first-hand experience in the electricity industry. I was a journalist at the time and wanted to do more than just write about it. The second time around, I found myself working as a consultant. But a desire to engage in practical work rather than advising drove me back to Transpower.
I had also been influenced when collaborating with someone from Transpower on an industry working group. This person’s constructive and hard-working attitude left an impression on me, and their ability to take a whole-of-New Zealand perspective was hugely appealing.
What makes you proud?
When people ask me what I do, it feels good to talk about being part of keeping the lights on and playing a role in New Zealand's decarbonisation journey. The power system and market can be perplexing at times, but I find satisfaction in being part of the effort to address these critical challenges within a complex framework.
Within my role, I take great pride in the fact that my team contributes to the development of the next generation of engineers and planners for New Zealand's energy system. I enjoy witnessing the growth and progress of these individuals who will shape the future of our nation's energy landscape.
What’s the best part of your role?
Working in Operations, the impact of your role is remarkably immediate, allowing you to witness the tangible value of your work daily. What I find captivating is the multifaceted nature of the power system that we have the privilege to explore. From delving into the intricacies of the electricity market to ensuring the security of the system, from monitoring the lake levels for the hydro dams to embracing the advancements in renewable generation, and from overseeing the maintenance of transmission lines and substations to tackling the latest challenges within our bustling 24/7 control centres.
