Transpower, Northpower and Top Energy are working together with the communities and businesses of Northland to plan electricity infrastructure that ensures a resilient, reliable network and helps Northland take advantage of its abundant sun, wind and geothermal energy potential.
As the owners and operators of region’s power lines and substations, Transpower, Northpower and Top Energy are committed to improving Northland’s power network and are underway with a range of initiatives to achieve that. We are also working together to plan for an “Energy Bridge”, a game-changing set of infrastructure investments that can pave the way for an energy future where Northland benefits from its abundant natural resources.
Resilience, reliability and an Energy Bridge - Te Tai Tokerau Northland
In December 2024 we published Resilience, reliability and an Energy Bridge - Te Tai Tokerau Northland. This document explains what is being done now on each network to boost resilience and reliability, including considering whether operating Northland’s networks as a series of “islands” is feasible. It also explains more about the Energy Bridge, and what the process will be from here.
We are aiming to use this document as a basis for a discussion with Te Tai Tokerau stakeholders, government, the electricity industry, generation and load developers, and to determine the long-term direction for Northland’s electricity infrastructure. We want to collaborate with others who have an interest in Northland’s energy future to jointly establish a preferred pathway for future investment.
How to be part of this work
Transpower, Northpower and Top Energy will continue to engage with central stakeholders to work through options for the Energy Bridge. We will also engage with local stakeholders in early 2025 to share an update of our work.
To register your interest in being part of these discussions please email us at: [email protected].
Please also share the document with others you know who may have an interest.
We would like to hear from you to understand:
- Your goals and aspirations for Northland and how electricity could support them
- Your views on the Energy Bridge and how it aligns with or may affect your decision-making on investments
- Any further plans we are not aware of that would increase electricity demand or increase electricity generation in the region.
Later in 2025 we will update on you on our progress and the next steps.
