What are we doing?

Example of type of pole to replace towers on Paekakariki to Takapu Road Line

Transpower has replaced five towers on its Paekakariki-Takapu Road 110 kV line with new pole structures. All structures to be replaced are within the western side of Belmont Regional Park, adjacent to East Porirua. Three of these were replaced in 2023, and two in 2024. Throughout 2025, there will be ongoing work to remove the two remaining towers on the 110kV line.

Why are we doing it?

These towers were originally built in 1924 and despite our regular maintenance activities on them (including regular painting), they have significant corrosion and loss of galvanising on them. Rather than a continued aggressive maintenance plan into the future - a more optimal solution is to replace the tower structures with new pole structures.

How will it affect you?

We do not expect any outages while we do this work, however as it is within Belmont Regional Park, we will be notifying park users through signage and advertising to take care and watch out for closed tracks to allow our crews to safely get equipment to and from the site.

Timeline and updates

Work began on this tower replacement project in mid-2023 and was completed in phases across 2023 and 2024. The work to remove the final two towers is expected to be completed in late 2025.
