What are we doing?
Transpower is working on a project to redevelop its Waiotahe substation in Eastern Bay of Plenty (near Opotiki) to allow the connection of new solar generation being planned/built nearby. The project will involve some replacement and new equipment at Waiotahe - with extension of the existing switchyard but still within Transpower's site boundaries.
Why are we doing it?
With the need to move to a net zero carbon economy, there are many new generation projects planned or underway to facilitate that. Transpower's role is to connect that generation into the national grid, to make that generation available to all electricity consumers. The Waiotahe substation is next door to the expected solar generation, and in order to provide a connection we need to redevelop the site and upgrade some of the equipment there.
